Chicago The Musical

Chicago - a jazz-filled treat for grown-ups

While it can be fun to watch family-oriented musicals, a trip to the theatre for a date or anniversary calls for something a little more action-packed and grown up - which is where Chicago comes in.

A favourite in the West End since it razzle-dazzled its way into the public consciousness in 1997, Chicago is sizzling, perfectly choreographed and sure to have you glued to your seat (when you're not tapping your toes to the music, that is). It is one of London's longest-running shows, but the show's accurate period style and relevant storyline mean that it continues to be a crowd-puller at the Cambridge Theatre to this day.

Chicago tells the story of Roxie Hart, a young woman who dreams of becoming a jazz singer in the 1920s. She thinks she is halfway there when she meets a man who promises to get her to the top, but she is so incensed when she finds that he is conning her that she pulls out her gun and shoots him. Roxie's lover dies and she finds herself on Death Row with her idol, singer Velma Kelly, and a host of other prisoners. Both women are forced to use their wiles (and the questionable morals of lawyer Billy Flynn) to curry the public's favour and avoid the gallows. As if this wasn't entertainment enough for the audience, this journey is also peppered with rousing tunes such as Cell Block Tango, All That Jazz and They Both Reached for the Gun.

This lively atmosphere could be why Chicago is not only a hit London theatre fans, but with critics too. The Times calls it "the sharpest, slickest show on the block", while What's On describes the musical as being "as hard and shiny as lacquered nails".

Check it out for yourself and see if you're not tapping your heels and daydreaming about jazz and speakeasies on the journey home afterwards!

More About Chicago London

Chicago is one of London’s most popular and thrilling smash hit musicals. Now the longest running Broadway Musical to play in West End , this multi award winning production is filled with sensational choreography inspired by Bob Fosse and a sizzling score including All That Jazz, Cell Block Tango and Razzle Dazzle.

Chicago tells the deliciously naughty story of cabaret singer Roxie Hart, who murders her lover and ends up in jail, ruled over by buxom prison warden Mama Morton. Desperate to get acquitted, Roxie turns to sleazy lawyer Billy Flynn, who has a reputation for saving his charges from the gallows. As fame-hungry and attention-seeking as each other, Roxie and Billy's partnership brings them both the press attention they desire - that is, until another pretty, young, ‘wrongly-accused’ girl comes along and Roxie finds her case is no longer Billy's priority.

Instead, Roxie teams up with another of Billy's former clients, fellow murderess Velma Kelly, to form an unusual nightclub act which they hope will keep both of them in the public eye.

A nightclub dancer…a smooth talking lawyer….and a cell block of sin. It would be a crime to miss it.
