The Story behind Chicago The Musical
Chicago’s story is real life… and here is what happened in Chicago so many years ago that eventually lead to this celebrated production. If you are not aware of the events that took place all those years ago… you may never be able to fully appreciate its beauty at the Cambridge theatre in London. Here is what happened…
Back in 1924, in the town of Chicago, USA a woman named Beulah Annan was caught on charges of killing her lover, named Harry Kalsetd. She maintained that he had gotten into her house and she had fired the shots in self-defense. At the same time, another woman named Belva Gaertner was held on charges of killing her husband.
American newspaper, the Chicago Tribune had made a big issue out of these stories – putting them on their front pages and giving the stories undue media coverage. Most of what the newspaper did were cleverly disguised remarks and misinformation for the sake of higher sales.
Now both these women had hired a sleazy lawyer Billy Flynn who used the excessive hype created by papers to his client’s advantage. Finally, both Belva & Beulah are acquitted… though it is quite obvious that they had committed the crimes. Chicago Tribune’s lead reporter on the women’s story, Maurine Watkins went on to make her own stage comedy out of this whole affair and coined the name Chicago for the first time.
The most important point projected by this phenomena of a musical is that manipulation power of media that it has and uses over justice – doubtless is the fact that it has become all the more applicable today than it was back then, thus it clicks and entertains and takes you into a whole new world of its own.
